Difference between SEO and PPC

Introduction

SEO stands for search engine optimization and it is the process through which you optimize certain elements of your website and certain elements that lead to your website in a way that people from the search engines get to your website more often. PPC stands for pay per click and it is an advertising method you can employ through which you display links to your website on different search engines and other websites as well and for every click that comes through to your website, you pay someone a particular amount of money. While there are a number of similarities between SEO and PPC, they are not the same thing and indeed the differences between them are quite big.

Effort

SEO by far takes a lot more effort than PPC. When you are doing PPC advertising, all you have to do is figure out the maximum amount of money you are willing to pay per click and then cross-reference that with the relevant keywords that fall into your price range. Some PPC advertising sources allow you to set daily maximum amounts as well if that rocks your boat and therefore the effort involved in PPC is quite minimal.

SEO on the other hand requires you to slave away not only in the creation of your content and the construction of your website, but also in getting outside sources to link to that website with very specific anchor text to the links so that you get the benefits of the SEO exactly where you want them to be. You can be done with PPC advertising in a matter of minutes whereas proper SEO could take months to do initially and then will require you to continue doing ongoing work as time goes on.

Cost

Assuming that you are going to be doing the SEO work yourself through learning and then doing, what you are going to find is that the other major difference between SEO and PPC is the fact that the cost is quite different. PPC will cost a lot of money in the long run and SEO will be absolutely free if you decide to do it yourself. This makes sense somewhat when the effort difference is considered above, because if PPC is easier to do it is logical that it would have a higher cost attached to it when the overall picture is considered.
